Sheffield : Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
The Jessop Tilt Hammers form a feature at the entrance to Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. They date from the 19th century and were used at the Brightside Works of William Jessop. They were presented to the Society for the Preservation of Old Sheffield Tools by W Jessop and Sons in 1939. The society was collecting historic equipment from Sheffield's metalworking industries for preservation in a proposed museum at Abbeydale, which had been purchased by the Alderman J G Graves Trust in 1935 and donated to Sheffield City Council. The museum finally opened to the public in 1970.
