Scythes were painted to protect them from rust in the Blacking Shop. Originally, the paint was made up of a rapid drying mixture of Prussian blue in shellac varnish. Later, when enamel paints were developed, the blades were pre-heated on the iron bars in front of the fire to speed up drying.

The larger of the two fireplaces, the 'winter fire', included a back boiler which provided central heating for the Warehouse. This boiler exploded in a fatal accident in 1870. The smaller 'summer fire' used less fuel and did not operate the central heating system.

The 'painting block' was used by Tyzack Sons and Turner at Little London Works until 1979.

When dry, the scythes went to the warehouses for storage. Straw rope was used for packing the blades for despatch.

On an anvil in the corner of the Blacking Shop, the highly skilled cold amithing and setting of blades was carried out. The wooden handles for the scythes, usually made of hickory or ash, were imported ready-made from the United States.
