Sun Fire Office Plaque. Fournier Street, Spitalfields, London
Following the Great Fire of London in 1666 It became obvious that some kind of fire fighting brigade was necessary to prevent a further disaster. The Sun Fire Office was formed to provide such a service. They issued plaques to be affixed to the outside wall of properties owned by those people who had subscribed to the service. Those that displayed no plaque was left to burn.
This example probably dates from the second half of the 18th century
