Fossil at Far Arnside (1)
When coastal erosion uncovered a large, smoothed slab from under the saltmarsh turf many fossils were revealed. Over the years these have become more and more obscured as sand and shingle wash over them. This evening it was difficult to locate any and there were many surface scratches on the rock (could be tidal movement of shingle scraping the rock or thoughtless cyclists riding over them?). The rock is Carboniferous limestone about 330 million years old and the specimen is a tube-shaped coral called Siphonophyllia.
