Hope Woodlands : Derwent Valley Aqueduct
Derwent Valley Water Board was established in 1899 to supply water to Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield. Howden Reservoir and Derwent Reservoir were constructed between 1901 and 1916.
The Derwent Valley Aqueduct carries untreated water over Ladybower Reservoir to Bamford Water Treatment Works. Treated water then flows down the 28 miles (45 km) long aqueduct to a covered service reservoir at Ambergate, to supply clean water to Derby and Leicester. A tunnel carries some of the water east to the lower of the two Rivelin Dams, in order to supply Sheffield.
Downstream of Bamford, the aqueduct becomes potable, with the flow augmented from various water treatment works. The additional water helps to balance the soft, and relatively acidic nature, of the water from the Upper Derwent catchment area.
