The Bass Rock
The Bass Rock
This is a view of the volcanic plug in the Firth of Forth from the A198 road west of Castleton. The island is well known for its large colony of gannets (Morus bassanus) and for a close view of a gannet pair on the rock, see NT6087 : Gannets on the Bass Rock. I have been fortunate to be able to land three times on the rock during the breeding season and experience close up the incredible sounds and smells of a busy gannetry. The lighthouse was automated in 1988.
