The Covenanters Hid Here
The Covenanters Hid Here
During the 17th century, the Scottish Presbyterian Covenanters were in conflict with the wishes of King Charles I to impose Episcopacy on the country. Scotland suffered fifty years of persecution and brutal killings. During that time, local Covenanters hid from the soldiers in Penwhapple Glen. As this downstream view shows, the glen is narrow, steep-sided and deep. It probably was wooded during the Covenanting times and would be a good hiding place. Old Dailly churchyard, in the next square, contains several Covenanting graves. There's a public footpath up the lower end of Penwhapple Glen, starting from Old Dailly, but take your secateurs and wellies if you go any later than early May!
