The Prow at Wilton One (Horrocks Fold Quarries)
The Prow at Wilton One (Horrocks Fold Quarries)
This remarkable blade of rock (unique in the Lancashire quarries) is one of the most popular climbing grounds in the county. On top, it is less than a metre wide in places with a drop of 20m on the outer face and 14m on this (the inner) face. It holds many classic quarry climbs and is often busy on summer evenings (midge density permitting!). Unfortunately, the area also holds attractions for the more anti-social element of society and broken glass, cans and discarded barbecues are often strewn around. After finishing a climb it is possible to (carefully!) walk along the top of the Prow and descend by a relatively easy scramble on the right of the picture. This can be more exciting than the actual climb but is all part of the essential Wilton experience.
