Hospitium of St John, Reading Abbey
Hospitium of St John, Reading Abbey
The Hospitium of St John was established in 1189 to provide accommodation for visitors to Reading Abbey. The surviving building was part of a range of buildings that stretched westwards over the site now occupied by Reading Museum and Art Gallery, the gable end of which can be seen on the left of the picture. The Hospitium was home to Reading School from 1485 and University College Reading (now the University of Reading) from 1892. It now houses a children's nursery.
