The Workshops Compound
The Workshops Compound
Built in the mid-19th century, this complex of buildings arranged around an enclosed yard housed craftsmen such as smiths, wheelwrights, carpenters and, even, glaziers, whose task was to maintain the fabric of the estate. Also, on the same site, there was a steam engine (chimney seen on the right), a saw mill and a private gas works. Today, the buildings are divided into units sub-let to craftspeople - furniture makers, embroiderers, jewellery makers etc.
