Barrier to allow cycle access on canal towpath
These barriers are intended to stop motor bikes but allow pedal cycles. This one is on the Grand Union towpath by Horsenden Lane. Most of the ones along the Paddington branch of the canal have been removed, which makes the cycling easier. On this one the cycle can be posted through the slot while the cyclist goes round outside. Regular commuters mainly swing the bicycle round outside over the water rather than taking the extra time to feed the bike through, which involves lifting the back wheel to get it through the narrow part at the bottom.
