Moorland disturbed by former limestone industry
Moorland disturbed by former limestone industry
This is the same area as appears in the middle distance in NS4379 : Ancient trackway. The small burn mentioned there can be seen in the present image; it is one of those that combine to form the Spouts Burn.

See the item just cited for a discussion of ancient tracks that lead to this site, and for evidence that it has been subjected to industrial disturbance in the past, in connection with the local limestone industry. The tracks, which formed an extensive system linking sites connected with that industry, lead beyond this area, and to the east, where there are signs of surface quarrying (again, see the link given above).

I believe that this was the location of a lime-kiln called the Belting Kiln. An unmarked boundary (an "open march") led from there to NS4380 : The Common Kist, which is NNW of here. As noted above, an ancient track passes through here. This is a natural place for a crossing; I believe that it was was known, in the early part of the nineteenth century, as Hairshaws Ford. These names do not appear on OS maps, which they pre-date.

For a view of the same area in the opposite direction, see NS4379 : Moorland disturbed by former limestone industry.
Network of old limestone industry tracks
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
