Martyn Tomb - Athelhampton Chantry, Puddletown Church
The Athelhampton Chantry in the south transept of Puddletown church is the burial place of generations of the Martyn family of Athelhampton Hall. This tomb of the late C14 has carved alabaster effigies of a knight and his lady. The knight's left foot (his right leg is missing) rests on the small figure of a chained ape. This same creature also features on the tomb of Sir William Martyn Link and also on the Martyn family crest Link. The tomb is not in its original position, evident by the carved panels in the corner of the wall that once occupied the now hidden sides.
