Lady Overtoun's Walk
The area shown here is located high on the slope below the escarpment of NS4376 : The Long Crags.

The photograph shows just part of a track that runs, in total, for a distance of about 770 metres, although the southern half, in particular, is quite overgrown in places, with the result that not all of the route can now be followed on foot. At the time of writing, the northern half, part of which is shown here, is more accessible.

The walk is about 3.5 metres wide, and a great deal of labour has been expended in creating it; the left-hand side of the track is shored up on stones piled to a depth of about 0.8 metres (see NS4376 : Lady Overtoun's Walk). Near the northern end, much more effort was needed (NS4376 : Lady Overtoun's Walk).

This may seem an unlikely place for such a track, but the walk was created for the benefit of Lady Overtoun. In his booklet "Off the Main Road" (1976), I.M.M.MacPhail comments on the main footpath (now known as NS4377 : The Crags Circular Path) that leads past the foot of the slope, and on another path higher up (NS4376 : Path near the Long Crags). He then adds that "a third route, which runs parallel with the second but at a higher level, is even more rewarding so far as views are concerned. It was once a made road and is still known as LADY OVERTOUN'S WALK, as here the wife of the former owner used to take a walk after being conveyed in a dog-cart from NS4276 : Overtoun House".

This is an impressive feature, but one that is seldom seen; from the widely-used footpath at the foot of the crags, Lady Overtoun's Walk is hidden from view by an intervening ridge (shown in NS4376 : Ridge and valley in front of the Long Crags; see NS4376 : Lady Overtoun's Walk for a view from that ridge).

One appealing feature of the walk would have been the view back to Overtoun House itself: NS4376 : Lady Overtoun's Walk. The route tails off fairly abruptly at its northern end (NS4376 : Lady Overtoun's Walk). On a later visit, I followed another part of the same walk, in order to locate its southern end-point: NS4376 : Lady Overtoun's Walk.

The impressive remains of a track, high on the face of the Lang Craigs, built for Lady Overtoun. Her home, Overtoun House, and its extensive policies are well seen from this track. For the house, see Link
Lang Craigs Woodland :: NS4377
The woodland occupies 240 hectares (590 acres) that were acquired by the Woodland Trust Scotland in 2011. It is named after the Long Crags (or Lang Craigs), a line of cliffs Link making up the facade of the Kilpatrick Hills plateau. Lang Craigs Woodland is one of the 13 Commonwealth Woods, and is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). New paths have been laid out (waymarkers were added in May 2015), and about 160 hectares of new native woodland planted.
The Long Crags
The Long Crags, sometimes called the Lang Craigs, are the western escarpment of the Kilpatrick Hills. The lava (Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation) from which they are made originated in widespread volcanic activity about 350 million years ago, in the Carboniferous Period. The escarpment is shown as "Long Craig" in Roy's Military Survey of Scotland (1740s50s). It gives its name to nearby Lang Craigs Woodland (c.2011): Link
