The A354 - the road to the mainland
The A354 - the road to the mainland
This stretch of the A354 - leaving Portland - runs parallel to the ridge of Chesil Beach, on its landward side, for about a mile. It then leaves the shingle bank and heads more directly north, to Wyke Regis and Weymouth. The area to the right of the road in this picture is part of the former HMS Osprey site, once a Royal Navy helicopter base. Coastguard helicopters still fly from the site, but the area is also home to the National Sailing Academy.
