NS4277 : Remains of a structure

Remains of a structure
Remains of a structure
In the foreground is the faint outline of a structure, its interior lower than the surrounding area. In satellite imagery, it is best seen in Google Earth's "historical imagery", in the images dated January 28th, 2005, where the exceptionally shallow angle of the sun's illumination reveals details that are otherwise almost invisible.

Roy's Military Survey of Scotland (1740s-50s) shows a farmstead called Breadfield in this general area; it disappeared long ago (on the first-edition OS map of c.1860, it is not recorded, even as a ruin). Roy's map places Breadfield just to the west of a road (whose course is still used as a farm track) that leads NNE from the still-extant Maryland Farm. That farm track is on the right in the present photograph.

However, there are some stubs of twisted metal cables projecting from the ground at the western side of this area, which is located about midway between the site of a Starfish Decoy (NS4277 : Remains of Starfish decoy) and its control bunker (NS4277 : Starfish Decoy control bunker), so the traces may instead be related to that period. Given the faintness of the remains, it would be unwise to speculate further.

(In any case, there is an old enclosure, which is certainly not of recent origin, about 140 metres WNW of here; that enclosure is likely to have been associated with the farmstead of Breadfield: NS4177 : Remains of an enclosure.)

The area shown in the present photograph is one of the end-points of a very extensive network of tracks, which can be more reliably linked to the local limestone-burning industry, and which probably date from the eighteenth century; see, for example, NS4379 : Ancient trackway.

The fence on the left is also shown in NS4277 : Gate near Square Wood.
