Portland Castle (1): from the harbour
Portland Castle (1): from the harbour
Seen in evening light, from the end of a very long and rather rickety landing-stage.

It would be all too easy to visit Portland without noticing the castle, a compact Tudor fort, low down by the water's edge. It was one of a chain of fortifications commissioned by Henry VIII, stretching from Kent to Cornwall. The scheme was that it would share the defence of Portland Roads and Weymouth Harbour with its nearest neighbour, at Sandsfoot, on the mainland. Sandsfoot soon fell victim to coastal erosion, so that not much now remains of it Link - while Portland Castle has survived in pretty much its original condition.
