The Handley Cross bridge, Hamsterley
The Handley Cross bridge, Hamsterley
This gets its name from the novel of that name written by Robert Smith Surtees.
He owned Hamsterley Hall estate in the mid nineteenth century and the profits from the book are popularly supposed to have paid for the bridge to be built. The book was one of the famous "Jorrocks" series which made Surtees very famous (and rich).
