Antony Passage
Antony Passage
This row of cottages face the River Lynher, (also known as the St Germans River below the confluence with the River Tiddy at St Germans). The three houses behind were built on the old London to Penzance railway embankment which crossed the Forder Lake on a Brunel designed wooden viaduct which would have dominated this tiny village. The trains have used the Forder viaduct a few hundred yards further inland since 1908, see SX4157 : Forder Lake and the viaduct from Antony Passage.
In the foreground of this photograph is the small private harbour which takes up a large section of the shore in front of the cottages. This used to be the launch point of the Antony Passage ferry to the quay at Jupiter Point on the Antony House shore of the river. The cottage on the far left of this photograph was the Ferry House Inn and the ferryman was also the licensee. See LinkExternal link for an interesting history of the ferry.
The high tide line can clearly be seen on the slipway wall in the centre of the image.
