Glacial Striations on outcrop at Dunadd Hillfort
Glacial Striations on outcrop at Dunadd Hillfort
The picture shows a hard outcrop of rock, during the Ice Age this area would have been covered by a large ice sheet, the glacier (ice sheet) would move very slowly away from the area where it is being generated from, as more snow would fall on the higher ground, as it moves along the ground it would displace and gather large rocks at the bottom of the glacier, when the glacier encountered a hard outcrop such as Dunadd, it would actually flow both over the top and around it, however during this process the large rocks embedded in the base of the glacier would carve large grooves in the outcrop as it passes over it, these grooves are called striations. From these striations you can track the movement of the glacier in the locality.
