Scamell's Bridge
Scamell's Bridge
This iron bridge, now carrying Nelson Road over the River Avon, originally carried the railway over Castle Street. Built in 1857 by Joseph Butler & Co of the Stanningley Iron Works near Leeds, when the railway expanded in 1898 it was taken down and moved approximately 100 metres to this location without the use of any machinery. The work was supervised by a T. Scamell after whom the bridge was named. For a view of the information plaque on the bridge's history see SU1430 : Plaque on the bridge.
