Although surrounded by suburbia with Petts Wood to the south, and Chislehurst to the north and west, the National Trust owned Hawkwood Estate is like real countryside, with hedges, streams and woods. Walking down Botany Bay Lane from Chislehurst Common, one comes to a footpath leading off to the right. Beyond is a view that could be in the depths of the country. This is one of the fields of Tongs Farm, which was acquired in 1975 on the proviso that farming should continue to preserve its rural character.
