Whitby at night
Whitby at night
A view across the Esk as it flows through Whitby at night. This section of the river is known as the Upper Harbour and has numerous moored boats on jetties. The street on the right of the image is Church Street which leads down to the swing bridge which separates the Upper from the Lower harbour areas and is the only (dry) means of crossing the Esk in Whitby town centre.
The photo was taken from the top story window of a cottage off The Ropery at about 11:00pm; despite this late hour there was still quite a lot of light on the northwestern horizon and just a quarter of an hour before it had been light enough to "read a newspaper by" as the saying goes.
