John & Sarah Hill started their business in 1855 with a shop in Dukinfield and over the next few years expanded the baking side to complement the general Grocery & Provisions supplies. By the early 1890s, the manufacturing business had developed on a much larger scale and in 1894 Sarah Hill laid the foundation stone for Tudno Mill in the Ryecroft area of Ashton under Lyne. The mill still houses the bakery of Hill’s Biscuits (Link (Archive Link ) ) However, when I was growing up in this area in the 1950s, we just knew it as “John Hill’s Biscuit Factory”.
