The Meadows were created from the area once covered by the Burgh Loch, or South Loch, which was one of Edinburgh's main sources of water before supplies were piped from Comiston Springs in the late 17th century. In the 1720s, Thomas Hope of Rankeillor, the landowner at its eastern end, laid out walks and planted trees, making "The Meadow" a desirable place for promenading. His name is preserved in those of Hope Park Terrace and Rankeillor Street. By the late 18th century the town's southwards expansion beyond the old town walls had created the first 'New Town' as far as George Square and Buccleuch Place, resulting in human sewage being emptied into the loch. An attempt to drain off the polluted water at the loch's eastern end met with the opposition of Mr. Haig, owner of the Lochrin Distillery*, who saw his supply of cooling water from the burn flowing out of the loch's western end start to dwindle. The case went to court and was decided in favour of the Council. Further draining began in 1842, resulting in the loch's disappearance by 1860.
