Wheat variety trial at Gypsy Corner Farm
Field scale cereal variety trials usually feature strips of wheat varieties grown side by side. Current and new varieties are grown under different input regimes to see how disease and pest resistant they are. Not all the varieties will make it to the Recommended List some are just averagely good and have no outstanding attributes. The rich green strip (left) is a variety called Stigg, it has excellent disease resistance but has a modest yield so is unlikely to be widely grown. It will feature in future breeding programmes to bring forward its disease resistance in future varieties.
