View south from Hadrian's Wall Trail east of Rudchester
This panorama Link
provides some idea of the extensive views to the south from Vindabala Roman Fort. Rudchester is on the extreme left hidden by trees, with the site of the fort just out of view to the left. Part of the Hadrian's Wall footpath can be seen on the right, approaching the footbridge over March Burn NZ1067 : Valley of the March Burn, west of Rudchester.
A Mithraeum, or Roman temple, was excavated in this field (its site, visible on aerial photos, is over by the trees) in 1924 and five altars were found Link
The line of the vallum is not clear in this area just west of the fort. It may have been built over by the adjacent civilian settlement (vicus) or ploughed out, but its line can again be traced west of the March Burn.
The distant view is over the Tyne valley. The nearer hills on the right are at Horsley.
