Firing the One o'clock Gun, Edinburgh Castle
Firing the One o'clock Gun, Edinburgh Castle
First fired from the castle on 7th of June 1861 as a time signal for shipping in the Firth of Forth and Port of Leith. It is fired every day except Sundays Good Friday and Christmas Day, it is timed with a large white ball, raised from the Nelson monument on Calton Hill which drops at exactly the same time.
The photo shows the gun being fired, with Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth in the background.
