Orkney, Stenness: The Ring o' Brodgar
Orkney, Stenness: The Ring o' Brodgar
If you enjoy history, then you will love Orkney, which boasts three historical monuments per square mile. The most iconic of all must surely be the Ring o' Brodgar. Part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, Brodgar is a stone circle standing on a thin strip of land separating the Harray and Stenness lochs.

The monument's precise age is uncertain, but it is generally assumed that it was erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC.

The stone ring is a true circle, almost 104 metres in diameter. Originally there were 60 megaliths but today, only 27 stones remain, varying in height from 2.1 to 4.7 metres. Brodgar ring is the third largest stone circle in the British Isles, beaten only by the outer ring of stones at Avebury and the Greater Ring at Stanton Drew in England.
