St Gregory's Church, Lectern
St Gregory's Church, Lectern
"The throne of the word of God". From here, the holy scriptures are read.

Lecterns are very often in the shape of an eagle because it is this bird which flies closest to the heavens, and The Bible comes from God.

alternatively....
the eagle is a symbol of the resurrection or ascension of Christ due to the fact that it soars upwards. By extension, the eagle symbolises baptised Christians, who have symbolically died and risen with Christ.
Church of St Gregory

The building is mostly 13th and 19th Century, with a small remnant of the original 9th Century Saxon Church which survived William the Conqueror’s harrying of the North. The early 14th Century West Tower is one of the best examples of a fortified church tower in the country. It was built to withstand Scottish raiding parties and the slot for the portcullis may still be seen.

The church is a Grade I Listed building (LinkExternal link - British Listed Buildings.com)
