The south entrance to The Piece Hall was widened in 1871 and this plaque was erected at that time to record the building's history. It reads:
A D 1871
THIS BUILDING WAS CONVERTED INTO
THE MARKET HALL
BY THE CORPORATION OF HALIFAX
UNDER THE DIRECTIONS OF

OF THE COUNCIL, CONSISTING OF
