'Big Rig' discovers hot water, Science Central building site
Newcastle University's £1 million geothermal drilling project on the Science Central building site (the site of the former Scottish & Newcastle Brewery) has found hot water over 1000m below the surface LinkExternal link
Shells and corals in limestone rocks sampled by the bore hole showed that Newcastle had a tropical environment similar to the Bahamas LinkExternal link
It is hoped that the source of geothermal energy can be used to heat buildings in the local area, helping them cut their CO2 emissions NZ2464 : Most boring place in Newcastle!
