Parish Church of St Mary, Staindrop
St Mary’s Church, previously dedicated to St Gregory, is over 1200 years old. It is sometimes referred to as “The Cathedral of the Dales”.
The old Saxon church of St Gregory occupied the area from the screen to the third arch of the main aisle. In Norman times, it was enlarged into an abbey with the addition of a new tower at the west end and a small chancel was added at the east end. Evidence of the Saxon windows may still be seen above the Norman arches in the walls of the aisles.
Significant restoration work was carried out during the nineteenth century.
