Benjamin Ingham (1712-1772) was ordained in the Church of England in 1735, and later accompanied John Wesley on a mission to the American province of Georgia. In 1775 he left the established church and began to ordain his own ministers, founding over 80 congregations mostly in the north of England. But by the 1960s there were only seven left (here at Wheatley and at ColneWinewall and Cotton Tree in Lancashire; at Salterforth in the former West Riding, now transferred to Lancashire; at Kendal in Westmorland; and at Farringdon, Ontario, Canada). Since the closure of Salterforth, only this one at Wheatley remains in its original use.
