Trent Bridge: Ashes Test Match washout, 1981
After England had staggered to 94-6 on the Saturday of the First Test (see SK5838 : Trent Bridge Test Match, 1981: Alderman to Gower), steady rain set in and play was abandoned for the day. Australia won a low-scoring game by four wickets on the fourth day. (The Second Test at Lord's was drawn and the England captain, Ian Botham, sacked and replaced by Mike Brearley - but it was to be Botham's summer after his legendary exploits won the matches at Headingley, Edgbaston and Old Trafford and England won the six-match series 3-1.)
The old Ladies' Pavilion is to the left of the Victorian Pavilion, the offices and Bridgford Road stands which were replaced in 2008 to the right. For a view from the much higher current Radcliffe Road Stand showing recent developments and more modern covers, see SK5838 : Rain stopped play.
