In the foreground, next to NZ2254 : The Great Shed, Pockerley Waggonway, Beamish Museum, are the remains of a great beam engine from Seaham Harbour. It was supplied around 1830 by Hawks of Gateshead for the new coal port of Seaham Harbour being built by the Marquis of Londonderry NZ4349 : Marquis Point (former Londonderry Offices), Seaham
The Marquis' agent was John Buddle, 'King of the Coal Trade' NZ1652 : "Ye Old Earl Grey Inn", West Kyo,Co.Durham and the engineer at the harbour NZ4349 : Arklow freighters in Seaham Inner Harbour was William Chapman LinkExternal link
The combination of Hawks, Buddle and Chapman makes this engine the only surviving product of the team that produced the Steam Elephant locomotive. A reconstruction of this locomotive at Beamish Museum NZ2254 : The 'Steam Elephant', Pockerley Waggonway, Beamish Museum can be seen in full steam on Pockerley Waggonway in the distance where it provides short rides to the public. When the beam engine was built there was little distinction between the various forms of steam engine either for marine, locomotive or static use. The engine was used at Seaham Harbour to power three ballast cranes, operate a storm boom to protect the harbour mouth and also to pump sea water to the new town for domestic purposes.
Details from notice board in Beamish Museum.
