NS5379 : Ballachalairy Yett

Ballachalairy Yett
Ballachalairy Yett
The name appears on OS maps from the first-edition (surveyed in 1860) onwards, and is shown on large-scale mapping to the present day, although some of these maps now seem to apply the name incorrectly to the road, rather than to the location of the gate ("yett" means "gate").

J.G.Smith, in "The Parish of Strathblane" (1886), mentions this location (with a minor difference in spelling): "leaving now the road at 'Ballochalary Yett', and walking up the 'Red Road', the NS5479 : Boards Farm is passed a little distance on the left" (he also makes it explicit in his index of place-names that it refers to a gate).

The first-mentioned road is the one heading eastwards from Carbeth Guthrie to Strathblane, following the same line as the present-day road (which can be seen beyond the gate). The 'Red Road' is shown on the first-edition OS map as the 'NS5379 : Red Brae Road', and follows the same route as the path that now leads roughly SSE from NS53767948 through the woods, as shown on the 1:25000 map.
