Cissbury Ring in the early morning sunshine
Cissbury Ring in the early morning sunshine
Photographed just after 7 o'clock on a beautiful summer's morning, the path around the inner wall of Cissbury Ring provides fine views - the one here is towards Worthing and the English Channel beyond. Cissbury Ring is the second largest hill fort in England and, covering some 60 acres, one of the largest in Britain and Europe. The inner wall is a mile around. The earthworks that form the fortifications were built around the beginning of the Middle Iron-Age but were abandoned in the period 50 BC - 50 AD.
