The colliery that was here was named Bomarsund after a Russian fortress in the Baltic Sea taken by a British naval force in the Crimean War (August 1854). News of this important capture reached England as the Barrington Company were laying the foundations of 10 cottages which were to accommodate those sinking the new shaft. To mark the victory over the Russian Bear, the row was named 'Bomarsund'.
