Down goods train between Newnham and Awre, with an odd locomotive
View northward, towards Newnham, Gloucester etc.; ex-GWR Swindon etc. - Gloucester - South Wales main line. The Controllers must have been vexed by shortage of engines for freight, for this is one of the modern (1936) hybrid edition of 19th century express 4-4-0's, rebuilds of 'Dukes' and 'Bulldogs'. No. 9008 was built in 2/37 as No. 3208 'Earl Bathurst', from Duke No. 3285 and Bulldog No. 3403; it lost its name after a few months, was given its present number in 7/46 and withdrawn 7/57. These 'Dukedogs' used to be 'modern' express locomotives in the 1940s and 1950s on the ex-Cambrian main lines.
