This is photo number 2 in a sequence of 3. Here, with road traffic at a standstill, the bridge operator can allow the mechanism to swing the bridge open. A skilled bargee, such as shown here, will not need the bridge fully open before passing through. When I first used this bridge in the 1970's operation was manual, by means of a windlass, and the bridge had to be physically pushed open.
