Holy Island village cross
Holy Island village cross
An inscription at the base says "This cross rebuilt by H.C.Selby Esq 1828". Selby was a prosperous landowner who made several improvements on Holy Island, including tidying up the Priory ruins (information from the Public Monument and Sculpture Association LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) ).
The cross was designed by John Dobson of Newcastle. It replaced a 16th century market cross on the site.
