House of Joseph Lister, Rutland Street
Lister lived here briefly at the outset of his career, between 1856 and 1860, while working as an assistant surgeon at the city's Royal Infirmary. His pioneering use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic began in 1867 while professor of surgery at the University of Glasgow. He returned to Edinburgh in 1869, moving later to King's College Hospital, London. LinkExternal link
