Captain's Tower and Keep, Carlisle Castle
Captain's Tower and Keep, Carlisle Castle
The Captain's Tower was first constructed in the 1160s though it has been altered since then. In the background stands the keep, the oldest part of Carlisle Castle and the royal palace of King David I of Scotland. Work started on the keep in the 1120s on the orders of Henry I of England, but after control of the castle passed to the Scots, construction was completed by David I. It was in the keep that David I died in 1153.
