This Green-veined White butterfly was drinking nectar from deep within the flower of a Great Willowherb plant beside the Fishpool on Biddulph Grange Country Park.

The Green-veined White (Pieris napi) is a common butterfly, although its numbers are thought to be possibly on the decline due to the loss of its grassland habitats, they can be found throughout Britain and its preferred habitats are damp, lush vegetation where their food-plants can be found, especially hedgerows, ditches, banks of rivers, lakes and ponds, damp meadows and moorland plus woodland rides and edges of woods. It breeds on plants of the Crucifer family but it is not a pest of cabbage crops, as is commonly thought. The dusky vein markings on the undersides of the wings are variable in colour and make it well camouflaged when it is roosting amongst vegetation. They have a wingspan of approximately 40-52mm and can be seen flying between April and September.
Great Willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum) is also known as Great Hairy Willowherb or Hairy Willowherb, some of its vernacular names include codlins-and-cream, apple-pie and cherry-pie. It is a tall plant, often growing to two metres. Both the leaves and the stem are covered in hairs giving it the scientific name of hirsutum, Latin for hirsute or hairy. Common habitats for Great Willowherb include marshland, ditches and along the banks of rivers and streams. It flowers from June to September, with a peak in July and August and they are pollinated by bees, hoverflies and sometimes butterflies.
