Yair at Craigendoran
Yair at Craigendoran
There were, at one time, six yairs (a form of fish-trap) on the shore between Ardoch and Craigendoran. As mentioned in the description for NS3179 : Yair at Colgrain, the fifth and sixth of them are in Camiseskan Bay. The one at Colgrain is the fifth, and is at the south-eastern end of the bay.

The one shown in the present photograph is the sixth and final one (it had not previously been identified as such in modern times, its function seemingly having been forgotten, so I submitted a report on it to WoSAS); it is located at the north-western end of the bay. Each of the six yairs is now illustrated on Geograph (the links in the end-notes will allow readers to navigate to each of them).

For a detailed description of what a yair is, see NS3576 : Ardoch Yair. As quoted there, the Old Statistical Account (1796) says that they are either "in the form of a crescent, or of three sides of a square". The yair here at Craigendoran is an example of the former, while the NS3179 : Yair at Colgrain exemplifies the latter.

For different views, see NS3180 : Yair at Craigendoran and NS3180 : Yair at Craigendoran.

The Rosneath Peninsula can be seen in the background, jutting out into the Firth of Clyde.

This is the last of six old yairs (fish-traps) whose remains can be seen on the shore between Ardoch and Craigendoran. The fifth of the yairs is at Colgrain Link and the first of them is Ardoch Yair Link
