Beamish Colliery
An original colliery in its 1913 condition. The Durham coalfield is a succession of coal measures around 0.6km thick sitting unconformably ontop of lower paleozoic sediments and volcanics. The seams are thin compared to South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and South Wales but provided good coking coal. This colliery was moved from its old site near where the entrance is. Inside is the original winding engine. NZ2154 : Beamish Colliery Winding Engine
