Calder and Hebble Canal. Note in the foreground the characteristic hand spike paddle gear whis is local to this navigation. It requires a piece of timber, about 1 metre in length, slightly tapered at the end, which is used to operate a spindle with holes in it that turn a gear to lift or raise the paddle.
