Salvage attempt on sunken torpedo boat in River Nene, Wisbech, 1978
This former motor torpedo boat came up the River Nene into Wisbech and moored alongside Nene Quay at the rear of the Rose and Crown between the two town bridges. Allegedly the crew were unaware of the significant difference between high and low tides, or that this section of the river is relatively fast flowing. Having secured the boat at high tide on short mooring ropes it sank as the tide dropped and some of the moorings broke. The sunken boat was in the river for a number of years before eventually being removed. This photo, taken in October 1978, shows an early salvage attempt which failed. The old brick warehouse far left is now riverside apartments, see
Link but the cream brick and cream timber ones have been demolished. If anyone wishes to correct or add to this description please contact me, but as they say "never let the truth get in the way of a good story"
