Common toad (Bufo bufo)
The Common toad is a widespread amphibian and can be found throughout Britain but not in Ireland. It can grow to 8 centimetres long and is generally brown or olive brown. The skin is warty and often appears dry. Glands in the skin contain powerful toxins that protect the animal from its predators. The Common toad can be found in almost any habitat including gardens. Common toads congregate at breeding ponds in early April but for the rest of the year will wander well away from water as they are far more tolerant of dry conditions than the Common frog. They can live for many years with captive individuals having reached the age of 50.

This toad was photographed at Fairhaven water garden. For a wider view of this location see > LinkExternal link.
